Sort by Date in Excel
Learn how to sort dates in Excel, fix dates stored as text, sort by month, newest to oldest, oldest to newest, and custom date groups.
How Date Sorting Works
- Excel can sort real dates chronologically because dates are stored as serial numbers. If sorting looks wrong, the dates may be stored as text.
Sort Oldest to Newest
- Click a date cell, then use: Data -> Sort Oldest to Newest Use this for timelines, due dates, and transaction history.
Sort Newest to Oldest
- Use: Data -> Sort Newest to Oldest This is common for recent orders, latest updates, and newest activity.
Fix Dates Stored as Text
- If Excel sorts dates alphabetically, convert them to real dates. Text to Columns can often fix imported dates. Check that date filters appear in the filter menu; if they do not, Excel may not recognize the values as dates.
